Se la musica prog ha chiuso presto i battenti dell’alta visibilità, non si può dire che gli YES, tra i massimi esponenti del genere, abbiano avuto soste creative: The Ladderè il 6° album in studio degli anni ’90, e rappresenta un forte aggancio con il passato, un superamento di certe armonie pop che, negli ultimi tempi, avevano garantito la sopravvivenza. 

Parlando di YES occorre sempre citare la line up, vista la tendenza alla dinamicità: oltre agli ovvi Jon Anderson - che firma tutti i testi -, Chris Squire, Steve Howe e Alan White, troviamo Billy Sherwood alle chitarre e Igor Khoroshev alle tastiere.

L’iniziale “Homeworld” vale da sola il prezzo dell’album: colonna sonora di un videogame, è tra i brani più citati -dai fan- e coverizzati- dai musicisti. Tracce come “Finally “e “New Language” propongono un rock intriso dalla classicità del russo Igor, mentre si ritorna alle ballad tanto amate da Anderson con “It Will Be a Good Day” e “Nine Voices”; tipico gioco vocale per “To Be Alive” e struggente la trama di “If only you knew”, dedicata da Jon alla moglie. Convince meno la fuga nella world music - “Lightning Strikes” e “Can I? “- e il reggae di “The Messenger”. “Face To Face” è un altro pilastro che verrà riproposto dal vivo con buona frequenza.

Tutti i brani sono firmati dalla band, che si riunì presso gli Armoury Studios di Vancouver, in Canada, affidando la produzione a Bruce Fairbairn, Sound Engineer indipendente di fama internazionale. Purtroppo si arrivò a un epilogo drammatico che segnò la lavorazione, perché proprio nella fase finale Fairbairn venne a mancare, giovanissimo.

Copertina affidata alla sapiente mano di Roger Dean che realizza uno dei suoi capolavori.

Un grande album per gli YES, che ci hanno abituato nel tempo all’alternanza tra perfezione e sufficienza. E’ anche l’occasione per vedere all’opera, da “titolare”, Igor Khoroshev, un talento naturale di cui si perderà traccia dopo “House of Yes”, dell’anno successivo.

 

 

If prog music has closed its doors of high visibility early, it cannot be said that YES, one of the leading exponents of the genre, has had creative stops: “The Ladder”is the 6th studio album of the 90s, and represents a strong attachment to the past , an overcoming of certain pop harmonies that, in recent times, had guaranteed survival.

Speaking of YES we should always mention the line up, given the tendency to dynamism: in addition to the obvious Jon Anderson - who signs all the lyrics -, Chris Squire, Steve Howe and Alan White, we find Billy Sherwood on guitars and Igor Khoroshev on keyboards.

 

The initial "Homeworld" alone is worth the price of the album: the soundtrack of a video game, it is among the most cited songs - by fans - and covered - by musicians. Tracks like "Finally" and "New Language" feature a rock steeped in the classic Russian Igor, while returning to Anderson's much-loved ballads with "It Will Be a Good Day" and "Nine Voices"; typical vocal play for "To Be Alive" and poignant the plot of "If only you knew", dedicated by Jon to his wife. Convinceless less the escape in world music - "Lightning Strikes" and "Can I? " - and the reggae of "The Messenger." "Face To Face" is another pillar that will be played live with good frequency.

 

All songs are signed by the band, who reunited at Armoury Studios in Vancouver, Canada, entrusting the production to Bruce Fairbairn, an internationally renowned independent sound engineer. Unfortunately,it came to a dramatic epilogue that marked the work, because in the final stage Fairbairn died, very young.
